此前微軟曾明確表示，XP用戶是無法通過升級安裝來升級到Windows 7的，只能可以通過購買升級光盤進行全新安裝的方法進行升級。但是比較奇怪的是，XP升級到Vista時支持的，然後就有人想了，既然XP升級到Vista是支持的，Vista升級到Windows 7又是可以的，那問題不就簡單了麼？先升級到Vista再升級到Windows 7不就行了麼？而事實上，已經有人試過了，確實可以。
從Windows Vista升級到Windows 7
根據Windows 7 Upgrade Test Matrix的描述，Windows Vista正式版(未安裝SP1)是無法直接升級到Windows 7的。而安裝了SP1或SP2的Vista版本則是可以直接升級到Windows 7的。同時，不支持的不支持的升級類型包括：
* 跨架構，比如，從32位升級到64位
* 跨語言
* 跨版本號，比如，從fre版本升級到chk版本
* 跨媒體類型
* Windows Vista Starter (SP1, SP2)無法直接升級到Windows 7，哪怕是Starter版本
* Windows Vista Home Basic (SP1, SP2) 32-bit (x86)和 64-bit (x64)可以升級到 Windows 7 Home Basic, Home PRemium和Ultimate 32-bit (x86) 和 64-bit (x64);
* Windows Vista Home Premium (SP1, SP2) 32-bit (x86) 和 64-bit (x64)可以升級到Windows 7 Home Premium，Ultimate 32-bit (x86) 和 64-bit (x64);
* Windows Vista Business (SP1, SP2) 32-bit (x86) 和 64-bit (x64)可以升級到Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise， Ultimate 32-bit (x86) 和 64-bit (x64);
* Windows Vista Enterprise (SP1, SP2) 32-bit (x86) 和 64-bit (x64)可以升級到Windows 7 Enterprise 32-bit (x86) 和 64-bit (x64);
* Windows Vista Ultimate (SP1, SP2) 32-bit (x86) 和 64-bit (x64)可以升級到Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit (x86) 和 64-bit (x64);

* 不支持Windows 7 M3 - Windows 7 Beta
* 不支持Windows 7 M3 - Windows 7 RC
* 不支持Windows 7 M3 - Windows 7 RTM
* 支持Windows 7 Beta - Windows 7 RC

特殊版本Windows 7升級
由於，歐盟和韓國的反壟斷法案，微軟將會發布兩個特別版的Windows 7，Windows 7 E和Windows 7 N(也有人稱Windows 7 K)。

* Windows 7 Home Basic N,E - Windows 7 Home Basic N, E或Windows 7 Home Premium N,E Professional N,E和Ultimate N,E
